gluttony [Dec. 30th, 2008|02:52 am]
i cannot get over all the gastronomic delights i've been partaking of this holiday season!  we are talking mouth-watering feasts for every meal!  new year's eve at the restaurant formerly known as triumphal palace was HEAVEN -- all my fave dishes, save for squab: softshell crab, lobster, peking duck, pork belly, pork tongue, red bean soup, the list goes on.  then for christmas, it was my (chef) cousin's idea to prepare a turducken, which is the name for this incredibly decadent dish someone crazy thought up that is a chicken stuffed inside a duck stuffed inside a turkey. naturally, you have to take out all the bones to fit everything in, so it involves quite a lot of prep work.  on top of all this, they managed to stuff it with three different types of homemade stuffing.  well, lemme tell you, it was TOTALLY WORTH IT, as the turducken turned out to be something far beyond the sum of its parts.  unfortunately, i'm left wondering, how can i ever go back to plain ol' turkey?  you just can't.

after christmas, we went up to my aunt's house in santa cruz and the whole time we've been here, she's been serving up perfectly barbequed chickens with homemade pickled lemons!  and the most delicious artichokes from nearby castroville soaked in vinegar and about a dozen herbs!  and so-called "hawaiian breakfasts!"  and ribs cooked with kim chee, so that it literally falls off the bone (yet another of my aunt's original recipes)!  and chipotle margaritas!

point is, i've been eating amazingly well over the holidayz and i am none too eager to return to real life.

In an effort to get people to look
into each other’s eyes more,
and also to appease the mutes,
the government has decided
to allot each person exactly one hundred
and sixty-seven words, per day.

When the phone rings, I put it to my ear
without saying hello. In the restaurant
I point at chicken noodle soup.
I am adjusting well to the new way.

Late at night, I call my long distance lover,
proudly say I only used fifty-nine today.
I saved the rest for you.

When she doesn’t respond,
I know she’s used up all her words,
so I slowly whisper I love you
thirty-two and a third times.
After that, we just sit on the line
and listen to each other breathe.

[music |passion pit -- sleepyhead]

this morning coming into the pcc flea market at about 8:30 am i encountered a group of three monks clad in beautiful orange garb and shower shoes with socks.  i took it as a good omen.  but then coming out at about 12.30 pm i saw another trio of monks crossing the street, the third of which was blissing out to an ipod (an ipod touch i should say).  an even better omen????

long-term goal [Aug. 20th, 2008|02:13 am]
i would like to ride a horse at some point.  i have done it for an extended period at least once before, but i forget the feeling.

one of my fondest early memories is of riding an elephant at caltech.  i guess they don't let you do that kind of thing anymore. gotta get to southeast asia or some shit.  well, that's just fine with me.  these things change.  in my dad's day they were riding galapagos tortoises.  it's kind of hard to imagine how that works, by the way.  when i saw them at the san diego zoo last week they were doing really amazing impressions of dead guys.

nothing gets my blood pumping quite like watching the world's finest athletes compete on the boob tube from my cherished spot on the couch.  i guess this makes me just like every other american.   an heroic everyman, if you will.

on the other hand, now that the games have gotten underway, i've been prompted by conflicting emotions to compose the following, slightly rueful haiku.

29th olympiad,
how i will miss you
only two weeks left!

on another note, i'm really into how the chinese pronounce "olympics."  say it with me now: "ow-lim-pee-ku!"
